Girls Und Panzer is an amazing show on so many levels. Probably not on a "best anime of all time level" (and I say that solely because of it's length), but it does a lot of things that'll make you say "I can't believe that actually works."
The plot of the story isn't really wild for an anime, but it's one that was pulled off so well. Simply put, women drive tanks.... no, that's the main premise. Ya know what happened in the war?, remales drove the tanks, and they loved that shit. Now that everybody's kool with everybody, they do it for sport. Without spoiling anything, that's as much as I want to say. At first glance it looks like there has to be some dumb gimmick to make anybody like it (good or bad), but the gimmick is it's done right. They actually have a real plot point(as absurd as it seems in the beginning), but it grows into a meaningful problem and is tastefully handled by the end of the series.
Even though the art itself isn't on a whole new level, the animation is astounding. As I've said a few times; I'm not much of a visual person, but there were plenty of times where I just smiled because the small details really added to the whole picture. The audio is well done, too. Dunno how many times my subwoofer actually rattled from some shots ringing out from tanks. But the shining glory of the audio, in my opinion is the score. The entire score (unless I'm mistaken) is orchestral and does well to add to the atmosphere of being makeshift battles of many dire situations. Everything just lined up well.
-tries to think of a way to lead into the next paragraph-
Lemme throw this out there. I honestly do think this series is solid and it is one of my favorites, but I think a lot of that exists because of my distaste towards Upotte. If you don't know Upotte, it's an even more absurd girls-in-an-unusual-military-scenario, but it has 2 glaring faults. The first is the plot is so random that the only reason you care about it is to see if the creators can make it work (imo they fail horribly at it). The second is the use of ecchi as a drawing point to the series (which is scary cause the girls are like... freshman in highschool iirc? I didn't finish that trash). Girls Und Panzer passed the first one easily, as I said earlier, and made absolutely NO use of ecchi. It's one thing that I hate it, but I actually assumed and accepted that "it was going to happen sooner or later, it's too obvious and they could probably actually make it work." But amazingly, they never stooped low enough to use that to get interest out of pedos. I respect that.
All in all, Girls Und Panzer is amazing. It's a series that'd I'd recommend to ANYBODY,. I can't imagine how anybody would hate it, even if they don't like the idea for any reason. There are too many things that are done correctly for it to just get passed.
