So yeah, for the past week or so, I've been gettin' down on the GoW3 beta. Got my code late from a random friend on facebook (and by random, I mean it's a friend of a friend whom I've never met, not even on the internet, but the guy was exxxxtra nice and gave me a spare code) I'm takin' a break from it right now to type this entry out (and to download some anime, lol), and it saddens me that it's going to go away, even for a little bit.
Overall, I think the game will shape up to be pretty good. I only got to try the last week, and I barely know shit 'bout Gears beforehand, but I think this one can shape up to be really good. The maps look pretty straight to me, look a reasonable size for most game types. Spawns need to be reworked for King of the Hill and Capture the Leader, but the maps themselves look straight.
The weapons? Ok, I could go off and say "sawed off shotgun", but here's what I think could be a fix for it. See, I understand the gun is dumb strong, and I understand that the 1 shot then super long reload is supposed to be the balance to it, but I personally think it's too good because there's no way for me to distinguish it from a gnasher. Like, if they give the SoS specific, easily visible skins, then I don't think it'll be AS MUCH of a problem because now they have to hide well, you have to screw up and get caught, AND they have to still nail one shot. It's not like now where you may rush them down cause you're thinking "gnasher vs gnasher" and guess what~~they got the SoS. Assuming the stats are accurate (SoS is 1 star stronger than gnasher, but gnasher has 1 star better range), then it seems like the only reasonable fix without making the gun pointless.
The other idea I have might work out, which is give the gnasher better range. Why would I suggest that? Not even because the gnasher itself is bad (it's good enough for me to get hate mail SPECIFICALLY for using the gnasher, lol), but because it might help out vs Lancer and Retro Lancer charges. I don't want to haul off and say "I'm pringles to them", because I have enough sense to MOVE OUT THE WAY when somebody comes at me with it, but I've tried to shoot somebody charging at me, and more often than not I'll either hit them for most of their health then die to them, or they'll flat out catch me first cause the active range for both weapons is fairly large.
I don't think they're large enough to be unfair, but it's just an idea I had about both of them. Another thing that would be nice for the retro lancer, though, would be for characters to make more frequent sounds as they do their charge. Maybe frequent, maybe sooner, I have to mess around with the game more, but I do know that I've been snuck sometimes without hearing a sound. It would make sense if they were right up on me then started, but I KNOW some people have RL-charged clear down a hall without making any noise to catch me. Kinda odd, imo.
Other stuff, I wish the blast radius for smokes were larger. Like, the stun/make you drop shit radius. Maybe I still suck with grenades and don't know any better. Hammer of Dawn needs to get nerfed. It's a lil 2good. I wish it were possible to react to being targeted, but it's not. Um... beyond that, I think anything weapon related is me being a scrub.
I don't want to say anything about movement yet because I know it's fairly important in Gears and I know I'm garbage at it. It feels kinda funky to take cover behind a wall, come off and shoot in one fluid motion. That's straight me, though. I gotta get the fingers down. I DO know, that all throughout today, I've been doin' some wack roll-glitch nonsense when I've rolled off walls. I hope that gets looked at. I also wish I knew how far I could slide into cover, that's another random "I need to play the game more" kinda thing.
Beyond that, the characters are kool. I kinda wish the game FORCED you to use a character (that'd be easier to distinguish who's who, what tendencies they have, weapons they probably have, etc etc), but it's straight. I would talk about sound, but I think I need to get a headset to play Gears.
It's the beta, but there are some huuuuuuge issues getting a party together. Having to fight through Hell and highwater just to get some people in a room. Hope that gets fixed.
All in all, I've had a good time with the game, though. I haven't really given a flip about Gears before, but I'm probably going to pick up a copy come November when it comes out. Game's a blast.
