Shotgun Reviews: Some Games, Some Anime, Some Movies.

So, I haven't done reviews in a while. I've seen alot, soooooo -loads up the Spas-12- Lets go.

________________

Starting with some games.

1) Vanquish
Status: Complete, save endgame (challenges)
Dogy Score: Gross 8/10

What is it?: This game is so f'n fun. In short, imagine if Marcus and Dom (from Gears of War) sat down with Dante (the DMC3 Dante) and decided to come up with a game. What happens? You get this hardboiled American Sam, Mega Man sliding everywhere where blasting the trash out of Russians.

What I Expected: Action. Guns. Sliding. Death.

What I Got: Action. Guns. Sliding. Death. and a lot of ".... OOOOOOOOMGGGGGGG THERE'S LIKE 5 MILLION OF THEM! -duck-" comments.

Would I Recommend It?: Yes. You want a good action game, get it. You just want something short to play? Rent it.

2) New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Status: Ongoing
Dogy Score: Beast (7/10)

What is it?: It's another frickin' Mario game.... like, seriously. That's it.

What did I expect?: To feel like I'm playing pretty much every Mario I've played that is not Mario 64.

What did I get?: The feeling that I somehow took NSMB:DS and borrowed it for Wii.

Would I recommend it?: If somebody told me they were looking to play a Mario game, one that is recent and does "real justice" to the series, then yes. If somebody was asking for something new and innovative, I'd tell them to look elsewhere unless they're one of the 5 people in the world who hasn't played one of the "standard Mario games."

Aight, for some Animeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

3) Sola
Status: Complete
Dogy Score: Gross (8/10)

What is it?: It's 'bout a guy who loves taking pictures of the sky. He's out taking pictures one morning and meets a girl (the one in the pic) by chance cause she's salty at a vending machine and kicking the trash out of it. Mindgames follow.

What I expected?: By reading the description and tags, I expected this anime to be some low-key, story driven slapstick comedy about chick who kicks vending machines. I found this by hitting the random button on a site, was ok with it being short, interested cause it got good scores, and was in the mood for something "different."

What I got.: Mindfucked. Like, ... it was GOOD. But I got a WHOLE lot more than I expected. The (commonly found) description is awesome because it hides HUGE plot points. It's borderline misleading. It'll be like if you saw Hancock before the extended previews with the white chick started airing. Story was actually GOOD and interesting, ... there was ACTION?!?! (and not only was I surprised that there was some, the end sequence was very good), and then ending was a SOLID ending.

Would I recommend it?: Yes. If you're looking for something to surprise you, give it a shot. Even if you're an action buff guy like me, if you're willing to get surprised, give it a shot.

4) Shakugan No Shana II
Status: Complete
Score: Aight (5/10)

What is it?: iiiiiits the 2nd season of Shakugan no Shana. Duh.

What I expected: A continuation of the first season, with hopes of better action.

What did I get?: Mad. Why? Because I actually got what I wanted, for the most part. However, the story went so far south as to make me look past the 1st season's two (imo) huge, illogical plot holes and went to the point where I felt like they kinda just slapped me in the face. It's so bad because there were some very solid action sequences in there, but all of that was blown off my mind by an ending that screams ".... ohshi~~ we're on the last ep? CLOSE IT UP GUYS!"

Would I recommend it?: I'd give people the cliffnotes of what's happening, and tell them to watch one fight scene near the end. That'd be about it. My opinion will change if they actually make a 3rd season because this one makes you want a resolution.

5) Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
Status: Hiatus (-stares sadly at Japan :( )
Current Score: GDLK!/The Truth -pending (9 or 10/10)

What is it?: In short, and in truth, it is THE anime that could possibly open the door and pave the way for the Magical Girl series not being weak ass, lovey dovey, "lets all be friends and save the world" trash that many, many, many, MANY, of it's sisters have already done.

What I expected.: Ok here's the story. So when I browsed through the current season (winter 2011) of anime, I saw this and said "oh, it's totally magical girl", and skipped it. After suggesting a current anime on my facebook (cause Dragon Crisis is dumb beyond the music), I was literally BLOWN UP with suggestions of Madoka. By credible sources. I thought I was getting trolled. Everybody said "give it 3 episodes, and if you don't like it, then you're crazy." Not "then it's ok, we understand." "You're crazy." Really now? A MAGICAL GIRL? So good that I, Mr. Stereotyped as guns/swords/no story man, HAS to watch? I finally caved and gave it a shot.

What did I get?: Amazed. I didn't really fall in love like everybody said I would in 3. It took me 'bout 5. I've seen (and, in large, like) Mai Hime. This isn't Mai Hime. No, Madoka is (currently) an anime so dark that it's indefinitely delayed from airing because "It'd be too depressing" for the Japanese people right now. (Writing this shortly after the earthquake and radiation spill). BEFORE that happened, protesters ALMOST got it taken off the air because of "Magical Girl Abuse" (no it's not rape). Straight up, I got shut up, put in my place, and entertained.

Would I recommend it?: Right now, that's the million dollar question. The answer really depends on 1 thing; will they alter the last two episodes? That rumor has been floating around about, and it seriously scares me. If they don't alter the last two, or they show them "uncut", as they were originally planned, and it has the ending I'm fairly certain it will have, then not only will I recommend it, but Madoka will be one of my top 3 animes. Easy. It could possibly bump Read or Die out of the #2 spot. HOWEVER. If they DO alter the eps and never release the "originals", or it has the "dumb" ending that is possible, then I'll have no real choice but to shoe this in as a stronger Mai Hime.

Only time will tell on this one.

6) Mugen No Juunin (a.k.a. Blade of the Immortal, and that's kinda important to know)
Status: Complete
Dogy Score: Meh* (4/10)

What is it? Samurai anime. In large, follows the same mold as a lot of other Samurais. Guy exists. Gets hired/tricked/recruited by a female. Follows her around doing/killing stuff for her. This one's about a guy who's immortal, hence the Manga title.

What I expected.: Action. Possibly some "super deep meaning/yomi lvl 5 philosophical" stuff. But mostly swords going through people.

What I got.: A lot more violent action than I was expecting. Like, I cringed at some parts. Dismemberment, a tongue getting sliced, there were some .... D: moments for me. THE OTHER THING I GOT, WHICH IS MORE IMPORTANT, WAS EXTREMELY MAD AT THE ENDING. AN ENDING SO ,,!,, THAT I'M NOW READY TO START READING MANGAS AGAIN.

Would I recommend it?: If and only if you've read the manga, and you're just DYING to see the anime adaptation. Even then, I'd recommend to watch a few specific episodes. If you're only looking for the anime, then guess what? IT'S AN INCOMPLETE SERIES. You're gunna get saaaaaaaaaaalty at the end.

*************

aaaaaaaand last, but not least, the movie.

______________

7) Sucker Punch
Dogy Score: Beast (7/10)

What is it?: It's a movie about a chick in that wrongfully gets put in a mental institute. That's 'bout all I'm gunna say.

What did I expect?: Um... I honestly dunno. I went into this one completely blind.

What I got: A nice lil' "cult flick", as I would call it. Contrary to what people say, it actually makes sense if you actually PAY ATTENTION. Is it off the walls at times? Yeah. But it was simple yet effective. The action? Hilariously good. That's what made it for me.

Would I recommend it?: Yeah. I could get away with saying "just watch it for the action". I wouldn't say OMG YOU HAVE TO WATCH THIS like it's the best thing ever, but I honestly think it's worth the money to go see it atm. If you don't believe me, just wait till gets to dollar theaters.

Aaaand that's it
