TIL: So I watched a bunch of tourneys today

(nope didn't proofread this. I imagine 8 people tops'll look at this and they already know the deal.)

Yeah, I watched a buncha stuff today...erm, this weekend, but stuff finished today. That's 'bout all I really cared about.

Starladder XII (DotA2)
VG kinda bodied everybody, IG kinda bodied everybody except VG, and everybody else got some degree of stuffed. I'm not gunna sit here and act like I keep up with DotA as much as I may suggest, but I kinda think the talk of the tourney (for Westerners?) is how Secret got dropped off.

Anyway, what I learned.

1) I don't care what anybody who actually knows me tells me, the new PL is -really frigging annoying- to try to hit.

OK sure, he's not the worst thing known to man in 6.83 or anything, but I always thought "I know I'm not good, but holy crap this guy is a natural wizard." And then Hao came along... and next leveled the dirt-trash outta Xi (even though the lost the fight. The T3 top fight). Again, none of this is really a big deal. I guess what I learned is that I can kinda tell what's actually good play now (beyond the super obvious). I'm still like, 2k or something I dunno. (I'll sit down and get my mmr one day)

There was gunna be a 2 and 3 but, upon citing them in my head, I deemed them "really friggin' irrelevant".

NorthWest Majors (MKX)
Yeah I wasn't foolin' around watching everything today. I have horribly unfair opinions when it comes to watching fighting game tourneys now; so all I cared about was getting an idea of how MKX is "panning out" right now. Mainly because I have a hunch I'm gunna wind up around it in the near future. (I say that, but a lot of that hunch got blown up Friday)

So I learned

1) SpecOps Cassie is honestly about as good as I think she is; really good, but not "the end of the world."

I had it in my mind that my opinion was being skewed by the fact that I watched a good bit of SonicFox, and he literally mauls anybody he plays (except for [spoiler]). So I thought the missile thing was really good, but not "wtf" good. Ironically enough, I ran into Funkdoc in a stream on Saturday and he said "Spec Ops Cass isn't the problem, but she's doing a good job deflecting who really is the problem." (That's not a direct quote, but I'm not digging through IRC logs.) I kinda agreed without knowing why, but I can actually say why I completely agree after watching NWM.

2) Kung Jin's really good.

I mean, I actually knew this (you have to keep in mind that I don't own MKX, nor do I play it), but I didn't know some of the real why he's good (as opposed to the week 1 "he's got long normals and stuff".) So like, d1 conversions are real and stuff. There's more to it, but I kinda don't care to go into details on it. Still have to do more homework.

3) [Summoner Quan Chi]

If you're reading this, you play MKX, and don't know why this is a thing, go look at some actual MKX so you can see for yourself. Like, it's glaringly obvious when you see it. IT'S PREEEEEETTY GOOD. lol

Final Smash (Smash4)
I actually did kinda-sorta half-assly watch ½ of a smash4 tourney today, but there's a huge catch. I only watched for one reason.

1) I honestly believe Smash4 could get a lot of mileage out of making 3v3 (or 4v4) the main focus of the game.

Simply put, it's a completely different dynamic than anything... pretty much anything else played competitively today. Not to mention Smash4 has enough gimmicks to offer up interesting diversity for a while (especially with rofl-customs). It kept me amused until the 3v1s happened. Then it was just a nerd convention.

______

That's really 'bout it. I watched some melee as well, but didn't take anything away from it. Started watching Super Nebulous, didn't finish it for [reasons]. Watched Drommelan, but don't remember any half-interesting details. Stuff just happened.

Kool, later.
