Shotgun Reviews: Anime #1

Shotgun Reviews. I mean, it's not like I need to give a long winded speech about these things. Just a quick "my opinion, Do I think you outta watch it" blah blah blah kinda thing.

LET'S GO!

1) Shinryaku! Ika Musume!
Status: Completed
Current Dogy Score: Beast (7/10)

What is it? Comedy anime about a squid girl who gets salty that humans are polluting the ocean. She then comes ashore with plans of invading and conquering the land.

What I expected. Welp, everybody was making this sound like "the comedy anime that finally makes me LOLmao.

What I got. I didn't like the first half cause I was forcing the anime to try to make me laugh. Then I realized "It's Japanese comedy and I already know I'm not gunna get cultural references. Just accept that it's stupid and go". Second half was alot better.

Would I recommend it? If you're one of those moe comedy anime junkies, an Azumanga Daioh or a Lucky Star love, then yeah, I don't see why you wouldn't like this. If you don't care for those kinds of anime, then I'm hard pressed to believe you'll give more of a flip than I did. The ONLY saving grace the series had was Chizuku (I think that was her name, I don't really remember anymore cause everything was like -rolls eyes-)

2) Shakugan no Shana
Status: Completed
Current Dogy Score: Straight (6/10)

What is it? It's not magical girl, thank god. It's part people/things gettin' messed up, part school life/love drama, part "SURPRISE MOTHERFUCKER!" That's really 'bout the best I can tell you without ruining key plot points.

What I expected. A lot of people gettin' wrecked by a Red-Haired chick with a katana. I figured there might be some outside "finding oneself" idea, but I expected the series to be action oriented.

What I got. 55% "Finding myself and who I am", 45% slice-n-dice. And then the action wasn't really worth mentioning til' halfway through the series.

Would I recommend it? If you're straight dying to watch something and it sparks some interest, it's ok. I don't think it's anything to go out of the way for, but it's not bad by any stretch of the imagination. It winds up being one of those animes where, if you know what you're getting into, then you'll be ok with the outcome.

3) Gosick!
Status: Ongoing:
Current Dogy Score: "It's the Truth." (10/10)

What is it? Detective/mystery anime about a Japanese kid who moves to Europe, enrolls in a school, and meets a ridiculously smart, sweets-loving library hermit girl.

What I expected. Something along the lines of the little bit I know about Case Closed; smart kid, witty/keen-observation detective work, loads of light humor.

What I got. Smart kid, witty/keen-observation detective work, light humor, dark cases/motives. Like, it crossed my mind that Gosick! would have some seriousness to it, but I didn't think there would be a lot of cold-blooded murder.

Would I recommend it? Yes. If you like this type of anime, I don't see how you could possibly dislike Gosick! unless you have a thing against violent cases. If you don't care for or don't watch this type of anime, it's a great starting point. Hell, I've already gone as far as to recommend it to people just starting anime.

4) Beezlebub
Status: Ongoing
Current Dogy Score: Beast (7/10)

What is it? Comedy about a guy who's a high school delinquent. One day he's chillin' minding his own business, next thing he knows, he's parenting a demon lord baby who's supposed to grow up and destroy humanity.

What I expected. Honestly, I was expecting to watch about 3 episodes and not give a flip. I literally said "this sounds retarded" when I was looking at the current season's lineup, and only came back to it when 4 reliable sources recommended it to me.

What I got. I got drawn in, that's what I got, ROFL. Like, I don't particularly think it's great yet, but I am interested and am compelled to keep watching. I see the potential for this to get hilarious.

Would I recommend it? -thinks- Yeah, I would. It's something different, it's by no stretch bad (although the shocking joke gets real old real quick, and I hear that's NOT in the manga). It's got enough to keep everybody interested, although they'd hold my attention more if they fleshed out the action just a LITTLE bit. I probably couldn't stomach watching 3 or more episodes in one sitting again, but one or two at a time is perfectly acceptable. It's worth a shot.

5) Dragon Crisis!
Status: Ongoing
Current Dogy Score: Meh (4/10)

What is it? Kid (Ryuji)'s sitting in school, gets kidnapped out of school by his second cousin. Quick plot stuff happens and they meet a girl. Guess what? She's a _ _ _ _ _ _ (6 letters).

What I expected. For some ungodly reason, I actually expected this to be aight. Like, I wasn't thinking great, but I expected for it to either have some good action, or a coherent, interesting plot.

What I got. Slapped in the face. In retrospect, I feel pretty retarded for giving Dragon Crisis! a chance. So far it's a bunch of random thrown at you, and then they try to fill in gaps later with some more illogical nonsense. Either that, or they bombard you with overused plot devices. I feel exactly like I did when I got a few episodes into Night Wizard; "Nigga, you know you f***ed up, right?"

Would I recommend it? If some female was looking for something light-hearted, magical girl-esque, this'd be something current to throw at them. A male? It'd have to be one of those super weeaboo, sugoi-kuwaii guys. I honestly couldn't see myself recommending this to any "standard" person. In fact, the only reason I myself still watch it is because I only have to watch one per week, and I do like the soundtrack.

6) Freezing
Status: Ongoing
Current Dogy Score: Gross (8/10)

What is it? It's ecchi as hell, that's what it is. XD. [/sarcasm]. It's about an academy that trains chicks to fight against alien invaders. Alongside them are guys who aid them in battle. ... yeah that description is loose as heck, but that's the gist of it.

What I expected. Something to get messed up by that chick in the picture (Satellizer). Literally, that's it.

What I got. ..... Satellizer messing chicks up, along with getting messed up by chicks, and a truckload of fanservice to boot. -_-

Would I recommend it? I would word it like this, "If you can accept that there is going to be some animated tits and/or ass on your screen every 5 minutes or so, then watch it. Action's pretty good." That's literally how it goes. Honestly, even if you're turned off by ecchi (like I am), if you can look past it, give it a shot. It's got some interesting quirks to it so far.

That wraps it up for the first volley of shotgun reviews.
