Story time, this is the story of how I now have 2 cpus of previous owners and mine is currently out of commission with a dead HD.
So, from the top!
A while ago, Shin's lil bro had a laptop. An old laptop (2004). He F.U.B.A.R.'d this laptop pretty hard. All sorts of nasty nasties on it. So his dad was like "Ya know what, we're gunna take this, and we're going to get you some virus protection. While we're at it, we're also going to update to Windows 7".
So, they went to best buy, bought like, McAfree or some nonsense and Windows 7. Dad goes to install Windows 7, and *poooop* laptop crashes. They try again. Poooop. No good. So his dad calls Shin and I over (makeshift geeksquad GOGOGO) to come install it. And we try, and try, and try, but it just won't work. No surprise. In the end, they wind up putting the laptop in with the real Geek Squad.
Few weeks go buy, and they get piece back. I ask Shin's lil bro what was wrong with it and he says "Something about it crashed, didn't have enough space or ram or something, I dunno. My dad bought me a new laptop so that's that." I was like "Oh... wait, he just bought you a new laptop?" Lil bro': "Yup" Dogy: "What you doin' with the old one." Lil Bro' ".... I dunno, lemme ask Dad." Turns out, they were just going to give it away. Now, seeing as I'm like, in line to get a lot of stuff, I was like "Hey, as long as you guys are just getting rid of it, how bout lemme have it and see if I can get it fixed." I had the perfect person in mind.
And I got a laptop.
I grab the thang, take it over to BJ (a.k.a. "Dream King"... nigga is all 'bout some Dreamland characters in some HorriBrawl). Anyway. BJ looks at it and is like "Oh, what happened was it just straight crashed. Not enough ram. All you need to do to fix the laptopi s put XP back on it. However, I suggest you put some more RAM on it". I tell him "that's straight, order some more ram."
So we sit down and look up the laptop. Problem is, we can't find the line on the website. Without opening it, BJ says "Oh, I think it has DDR2 ram." I agree with him.. So, he uses his super awesome discount from super awesome tiger direct and orders the ram.
'Bout 2 weeks go by, and he gets the ram. Opens the laptop, and LOL! IT TAKES DDR RAM. GG. BJ's like "oh no biggie, I'll just talk to TD and exchange the ram." Long story short, I still have the DDR2 ram. He "talked to them" they "agreed to exchange", but it never happened. He claims he's never using TD again, but I mean.... yeah.
So here I am. Assed out. No laptop. That's fine right? Just get some money and get some more ram. That's BJ's plan. Well, too bad life cancels him straight of that. Burnt its meter to keep him in check. And keep me out of the game.
But that's ok, cause life is normal, right? WRONG!
After many good years of service. That's when my soldier of a HD finally quits the war. Just gives up. Down for the count.
Profound sadness.
So I go take my dad's spare cpu. Oldest box in the house. And this thing, is Gutter Trash. Gateway from like, the 90s. Recently had XP put on it, but it only has like, 256 megs of ram. Half goes to the OS. Half of what's left can BARELY run antivirus + aim without dying. So no browsing. I run this setup for like, a hot 5 days before I get mad.
Time to hit up the man, the myth, the legend. Shin Reiatsu. I head over to his lair to.... [/epicness], really just to hang out with him like usual. I think we were double team trollin' on some Battlefield 2 (HOLLA AT THE SHIN/DOGY FAST BREAK. YE'AINT READY!). But while I'm at his house, I hit him up with the lol troll on his CPU.
Here's the rundown on his box. He's had it for a few years at this point, but it's been sitting out of commission for 'bout a year and a half (maybe more). Windows is having problems loading (like, you can ONLY do it in safemode). And ironically, he knows that all you have to do is format the HD. Now, the problem is that he's got a SATA drive, so formatting it with XP requires you to make a SATA/VaiRaid floppy for it to load the SATA drivers. He couldn't find the files when he went to reformat so he said "F this, I'll just go buy a IDE HD." Not a bad decision.
He never did.
So his box of epicness has just sat there. Useless. Lonely. Scared.
So I ask him "Say young brother, seeing as you've had your laptop for a good bit, why don't you let me get that old box off your hands. I'm sure I could figure out how to fix it, and you don't want to be troubled." ... this really isn't a new question, I've asked him quite a few times. But considering the situation, he's like "Meh, that's fine, I'm too lazy to fix it anyway, just get a IDE HD."
And away I go with the new box. (With a beast case. I love this case, although there are some power problems). So I go home, and ... well... I just try to reinstall XP. No go. Not surprised, that's what he said would happen. Try a few more times, no go. I'm like "no surprise."
So I turn it off. Go back to the trash box. A few days pass and I get sick and tired of the cpu completely freezing and dying while having simple aim convos so I unhook it and get salty. I start plottin' like mad. Gotta be someway I can get a functioning box. I need internet to figure out how to fix Shin's, need a HD for mine box, and need ram for the lapto~~.....
....~~... wait a sec, yo "WTF WAS WRONG WITH THE LAPTOP AGAIN?"
*hit the Chrono Trigger Theme*
Fail 1: They tried installing W7 on a 2004 laptop. Clearly not enough ram.
Fail 2: They just bought a new laptop. The old one wasnt trash at all.
Fail 3: BJ said the laptop was fine, he just SUGGESTED getting more ram.
Here I am, sitting around for a good 3 or 4 months, waiting for him to get the stuff to fix the laptop, AND NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH THE DAMN THING.
I immediately go over to his house, repossess my laptop, and take it home to pull out my XP CD.
I'm gunna wiii~~ *ROMANTIC* :(
Won't install. ... wat? *looks at XP CD* So. All this time, for all these years, for whatever reason, I just had a SP2 upgrade, and not a full pro. CD like I thought. Faiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiil.
Good thing Shin got my back. Soon as I hit him up, instead of trolling me.... well wait, no he trolled me. But he still had a spare XP cd that he let me have. Not borrow. Have.
Get home, boot it up. Laptop? OK-A-GO-GO! Kool. And XP is kool enough to install drivers, so I'm internet ready. Reconnect with myself (Because I am the internet) and I look up info for installing XP on a SATA HD.
So, cutting out my excruciating pain and embarrassment, it took me 3 days to find out that you have to run a format floppy program. The irony in ALL of this? You don't have to fish online for this prog, it comes with the MB driver (which Shin gave to me. So in short, he could have fixed this years ago).
Pop a floppy in my mom's p.o.s. box. Format it. Pop it in Shin's Ex-Box. Fire up XP. F6 Boot disk.
Desktop-a-go-go!
Laptop-a-go-go! Desktop-a-go-go! DOGY-A-GO-GO! YAYHUZZ!
And that's how we roooooooooll.
Now, In the future, I need to get some more ram for both of these cpus, and get a HD for mine. Realistically, I could just move my 2ndary HD to my new box, and try to salvage the data from my original HD, but I'm honestly too lazy to do that atm.
But that, my friends, is the tale of how 1 CPU multiplied into 2.
*closes book*
The end.
